Arnaud Leveau (PhD), researcher at Asia Centre and head of the Sparks program, contributed his insights to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) in its article “An unpredictable US could inspire Europe and Asia’s democracies to unite”.
In today’s uncertain geopolitical landscape, democracies in Europe and Asia can no longer afford to wait for direction from Washington. Instead, there is a powerful opportunity to take the initiative — to form a new alliance of liberal democracies across continents.
Such a coalition could proactively coordinate on critical issues:
- Security and defense
- Artificial intelligence and tech regulation
- Energy and supply chain resilience
- Climate and biodiversity protection
This is a moment for bold leadership. Europe and Asia must step up — not as passive observers in a US-China rivalry, but as active shapers of a more stable, democratic global order.
