China and Taiwan: Is there a chance for a new unification formula?

Marcin Jacoby from SWPS University spoke with Prof. Jean-Pierre Cabestan about the current political situation in Taiwan and cross-strait relations.

The discussion centers around Professor Cabestan’s new book published in French, “Taiwan: une démocratie face à la Chine” (Cavalier Bleu, 2026). The meeting starts with a short historical background on the complex relations between the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang, KMT) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the political status of Taiwan, moving on to current politics on the island and the dynamics in cross-strait relations between Washington, Beijing and Taipei. Professor Cabestan then focuses on the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in its third consecutive term in office, and on the recent visit of Cheng Li-wun, the new head of KMT, on the Mainland. The conversation ends with possible scenarios for future relations between Beijing and Taipei.
